Following last year’s tradition, this Consulate of Italy, in cooperation with Co.As.It. Brisbane, organized a free concert to celebrate Christmas together with the Italian Community and the whole city of Brisbane.

The Concert took place at the Old Museum of Brisbane (Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills), on Sunday December, 14th 2008, from 3pm to 5pm.

Performing Artists included Anna Maria La Spina (http://www.anna.com.au/), two world tours with the 20 million album selling group "Savage Garden", accompanied by the pianist Mark Watson and the Australian Girls Choir (http://www.ausgirlschoir.com.au/) who will sang traditional Christmas carols. Zosia Kilmartin also performed at the concert which was enjoyed by over 500 people

Italian Panettone and Champagne will be served after the concert, thanks to the kind support of Com.It.Es. for Queensland and Northern Territory.

ALESSANDRO SORBELLO 42 // ENTREPRENEUR

He may have grown up in Australia, but Alessandro remains exuberant about his birth country. Who wouldn’t? It’s easy to be passionate about Italy and share in its enduring love affair with food, music, fashion, art – and life.“You don’t have to be born Italian to feel Italian,” says Alessandro, of Alderley, who has organised an impressive line-up for the second annual Italian Week. “The festival is not an imprint of what you find in Italy because what we have here is different, but it is an extension of Italy.”It’s this fusion of cultures that drives Alessandro – and he’s well qualifi ed to blend the two.

Born in Milan, he moved to Queensland in 1970, but after school he returned, first as a backpacker for six months,and more recently to live and work for five years, dividing his time between Tuscany, Umbria and Sicily.

He landed back in Brisbane at the end of 2004 to pursue his varied business interests in property investment, internet communication and media production.

Entrepreneurial from a young age, Alessandro made a tidy sum as a 12 year old, picking mangoes from a tree in the grounds of Newmarket State Schooland selling them to neighbours. “My friends and I made $800 in one week – not bad,” he laughs.

His current project, Italian Week, brings together some of Australia’s fi nest Italian talents and businesses in a strong program of events covering opera (Rosario La Spina), contemporary music (Peter Cupples, who is “Italian by marriage”, and Anna-Maria La Spina), fashion (Elio Moda), coffee (Di Bella), food (Sirianni Fine Foods, Dolci Sapori and Viale Canova restaurant), architecture (Association Toscani nel Mondo), wine (Ballandean Estate) and cars Lamborghini,Maserati, Fiat, Alfa Romeo).

The festival has the support of the Brisbane Consulate of Italy and business heavyweight Steve Pellegrino.“We’re celebrating the fact that Italy is rich with culture, and among our exports are talented individuals committed to contributing to the Australian culture,” says Alessandro.

YOU’VE JUST RETURNED FROM LONDON. WHAT WERE YOU DOING THERE?
I’ve been in London for the past 3½ years, writing and recording songs. One of my songs, More, is sung by Kumi Koda on an album in Japan that’s gone triple platinum. As a songwriter, that’s the sort of thing we all hope for. It’s so good to be back in Brisbane. When I’m away I miss the familiarity, the sun and my family. I love being able to pop over to my mum’s for a coffee.

NAME SOME CAREER HIGHLIGHTS IN YOUR 34 YEARS.
I won Star Search on Channel 10 when I was 18. And I’ve done two world tours with Savage Garden as main backing vocalist and arranger. I also did duets with Darren [Hayes]. I’m not sure Australians realised how big they were overseas. They’re great guys to work with. Darren invited me to be his support at theSydney Opera House in 2006, and I did seven of my songs. That was weird because my brother [tenor Rosario La Spina] was doing an opera there at the same time. I’ve also done backing vocals for Ozzy Osbourne and Slash from Guns N’ Roses.

YOU’RE SINGING AT SUNCORP PIAZZA AS PART OF THE ITALIAN WEEK 2008 CELEBRATIONS. HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR ITALIAN HERITAGE TO YOU?
I’m very proud of it. It’s been a part of my whole life, but I’ve never really thought of it as my Italian side as opposed to my Australian side. When we were growing up, mum and dad would play Italian tapes in the car and my grandparents would speak Italian to me. It was normal to me. Singing in Italian feelsquite natural. I’ll be singing some songs in Italian and others in English [during the concert at Suncorp Piazza].

YOUR BROTHER ROSARIO IS ALSO PERFORMING AS PART OF ITALIAN WEEK. WAS MUSIC PART OF FAMILY LIFE?
Absolutely; Rosario started singing on TV when he was six. I was eight when I fi rst performed – I sang There’s A Kind Of Hush at an eisteddfod. The great thing is, competition has never come into it. I couldn’t be more proud of my brother – he’s a phenomenal opera singer. We support each other.

ARE YOU PRIMARILY A SINGER OR A SONGWRITER?
I’ve gotten into songwriting a lot more in recent years. People always ask me, how do you write a song? Well, I don’t know – how long is a piece of string? Last week I was driving around and had a drumbeat in my head and I recorded it on to my phone. Every song happens differently.

HOW DO YOU COPE WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF YOUR WORK?
It’s a positive and a negative; I never know what’s around the corner. You just have to deal with it – if you can’t, you shouldn’t be in the industry.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
I’m working on two very different projects. I’m renovating a property in Wavell Heights and working on a recording project that involves my brother and me, but on the pop side. We have some meetings with labels coming up, so we’ll know more about that soon.

They told him he was arrogant to think a Queenslander could break into the Melbourne coffee market, but that only spurred on Phil Di Bella. “We now have our coffee in 100 outlets in Victoria, and we’re adding 10 new ones every month,” he says, at his busy roasting house at Bowen Hills.” Phil, whose eponymous brand of beans is served in 900 premises across Australia in a business estimated to be worth $20 million, puts his success down to customer service. “I’m not a brain surgeon, but I understand sales and marketing and the importance of having a
consistent product that is readily available at a good price.” Phil espouses a “crop-to-cup”
philosophy, and his travels to Italy and Papua New Guinea have given him an intimate
knowledge of coffee growing, roasting and blending. “We don’t just sell coffee,” he says,
“we show people how to make it.” In addition to its regular coffee education program, Di Bella is conducting specialised workshops as part of Italian Week (www.italianweek.com.au). From a crown of roses to an iRosary, a stunning exhibition of artworks inspired by the Catholic rosary opens at artisan on Thursday 22 May 2008. The exhibition, Madonna Del Rosario showcases beautiful and quirky jewellery and objects by leading Australian artists and designers. It opens for the first time in Queensland and is proudly presented by St George bank.
An initiative of the Wollongong Italian community, in partnership with Wollongong City Gallery, the exhibition was the highlight of their 2006 Madonna Del Rosario festival; an annual event based on Southern Italian traditions celebrating Our Lady of the Rosary. Artisan has recreated the exhibition, enhancing it with a special Queensland addition, featuring works by local artists: Madeleine Brown, Anna Varendorft, Rachel Apelt, and Ky Curran.
The exhibition highlights not only the ingenuity of the artists and their fascinating responses to the Rosary but also their diverse and often symbolic use of media such as ceramics, paper, metal, coral, graphite, found objects and pasta.
Local artists, Rachel Apelt and Ky Curran, respond to the symbology of the Madonna: Rachel, by creating a new set of mysteries – the Five Agnostic Mysteries – which reference not only the numerology of the Rosary but also non -Christian archetypes of the compassionate mother. Meanwhile Ky creates a wall of Marys that form a shrine to the endurance of a mother’s love.
Carlier Makigawa, Dinosaur Designs, and Prue Venables stay true to the traditional form of the rosary, conceived as a contemplative piece for thoughtful meditation. Similarly, Roseanne Bartley, Annabelle Collett and Julia Moretti explore historical and ecclesiastical aspects of Catholicism, using materials of Italian origin.
Gerry Wedd and Sheridan Kennedy use the symbology of the rose as their point of reference. Sheridan devised a wearable ball game from a five-petalled extracted rose motif, while Gerry constructed an untouchable ceramic crown of roses and thorns inscribed with lyrics from David McCombe’s ‘Someone Watching Over Me’,
Others, including Sean O’Connell, Jane Bowden, Pierre Cavalan, Marilyn Puschak and Kathryn Orton, produced works that demonstrated the correlation between the repetitive process of making and the equally repetitive incantation of prayers.
While for the itinerant Roman Catholic, Will Soeterboek brings the ritual of the rosary into the 21st Century with his remarkable iRosary mp3 player, which plays the perfect mantra for meaningful moments.
Madonna Del Rosario was be opened by Grace Grace MP, Member for Brisbane Central, with a highlight performance by the Holy Cross Italian Choir. The exhibition runs until the 5th July 2008

Georgia Cupples is the daughter of well known Australian singer Peter Cupples, Georgia, is 14 years old and attends All Hallows secondary school in Brisbane.

Georgia from a young age has displayed a real natural ability with music, even though she has studied singing both privately and at the Brisbane conservatorium of music, its her natural ear for music that has seen her progress so quickly to become a very consummate performer.
Georgia is extremely creative, and has written some very fine songs, one of which she will perform at the concert celebrating Italian week.

As part of Italian Week 2008 celebrations, Brisbane City Football Club ‘Azzurri’ at Spencer Park Newmarket, will stage a tournament of ‘Calcetto’ 5-a-side Football on Wednesday 28th May 2008 to kick-off at 6.00pm, proudly supported and sponsored by Di Bella Coffee.

The tournament will consist of 2 groups of 4 teams, playing in a round robin of 10 minute halves, with the winner of each group to play in the Final for the ‘Di Bella Coffee Italian Week Cup’. Teams are to be made up of adult males, females or mixed and be named any region of Italy. Registration fee is $200 per team. With proceeds from registrations going to support Italian Week.

So grab some family and friends together and form a team and be part of this fun night.

Depazzi emerged in contrast to its origins back in the late 1800s. Both Tully and Evert families were among the earliest pioneers of opal mining in the harsh Australian outback. As they worked their land they uncovered the most exquisite gemstone the world had ever seen - the magnificent fire-kissed boulder opal.

That pioneering blood still runs thick today, as both Evert and Tully step-up their quest to take the Australian opal industry to unprecedented levels.

Tully's passion earned him a Churchill Fellowship to study jewellery design in Florence. While Evert is the voice for opal mining in Queensland, having only recently stepped down from heading a full operation: mining, cutting and retailing in north Queensland.

Together they're set to do for opals what Paspaley has done for pearls, as they drive Depazzi - Australia's most potent luxury goods brand - onto the international market.

Depazzi is an exuberant line of jewellery and accessories that is uniquely indigenous to Australia. Signature Depazzi style features wild animal leathers such as croc, with illustrious pearls, coral, woven cotton, and most notably, Australia's national stone - the opal.

The evolution of Depazzi has fused the lives of two outback pioneers. It is a story that unfolds like an epic: one that reveals all the trials and tribulations of Australian prospecting, but most notably the emergence and subsequent success of the iconic Australian brand, Depazzi.

Brisbane City Soccer Club, now called Brisbane City Football Club as from December 2006, originated in the hearts and minds of a small number of Italian migrants who not only brought their culture to their adopted land but also an undying love for 'calcio' (football). After much deliberation, the 'Azzurri' Club was founded in 1952 and headquarters was set up at Kedron Park.

This band of stalwarts set about the task of gaining promotion earnestly, and in 1959, with little money, great hope and tremendous spirit, won promotion into First Division. The Club then had to restructure its administration to cope with the professionalism of Queensland's Premier League, and in line with this, moved to Pineapple Park at Woolloongabba. The administration over the next few years was quite busy, evident by the change of the Club's grounds to Heath Park in 1962.

In 1963 the Club secured Spencer Park, which has been Brisbane City's home to date. It must be remembered that Spencer Park was a council dump, and part of the playing field was on the banks of Enoggera Creek. Most administrators of other clubs thought that Azzurri was suffering from 'spaghetti poisoning'. But, nevertheless, pursued by their dream, they pressed on regardless, and after 1,700 tip trucks of rubbish, 2 meters of ash and 60cm of topsoil, they had a field that was the envy of all other clubs in Brisbane.

Up to 1967 we produced wonderful and exciting football and the Club boasted no less than six Australian representatives that also wore the blue and white strip.

Brisbane City commenced fielding non-competitive junior teams in 1968. This proved such a success, that in 1969 six competitive junior teams were registered.

Supported by two decades of experience we moved into the seventies with confidence on and off the playing field, with improvements to the grounds, securing junior fields and the construction of the Clubhouse in 1974. The seventies were also known as the golden years, winning the Premiership in 1970, 1971 and 1976. Philips Cup winners, now known as the A-League, in 1977 and 1978 and Grand Final winners in 1970, 1971 and from 1973 to 1976.

In 1981 a 3000 capacity grandstand was built and on 17th May the 'Gino Merlo Stand' was opened. This achievement represented the Club's professional outlook and foresight in creating a tremendous atmosphere for the players and spectators to enjoy. We competed in the Philips League until 1986 and returned to the State League in 1987 and winning the Premiership in 1988.

Success followed in 1990 by winning the Grand Final. We struggled for a few years until 1995 where we secured the Premiership and in 1996 won the Queensland Cup. 1997 saw the beginning of the Premier League, in which Brisbane City was one of eight teams, and went on to win the Premiership and Grand Final. We continued to perform, winning Premierships in 1998 and 2000, Queensland Cup in 1998, 2001 and 2004, and Grand Finals in 1999 and 2001.
Brisbane City Football Club has achieved great success in competition at Local, State and National Level and will continue into the future with great optimism, hope and tremendous spirit, determination and enthusiasm.

The Barber of Seville, or The Useless Precaution (Il barbiere di Siviglia, ossia L'inutile precauzione) is an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini with a libretto (based on Beaumarchais's comedy Le Barbier de Séville) by Cesare Sterbini. The première (under the title Almaviva, or the Useless Precaution) took place on February 20, 1816, at the Teatro Argentina, Rome. Act 1 - The square in front of Dr. Bartolo's house. In conjunction with the QUT Art Museum Art exhibition and discussion featuring Sebastian Di Mauro, a significant Australian contemporary. His work was featured in the first National Gallery Sculpture Prize at the National Gallery and has been selected for every major sculpture prize in Australia. Sebastian is a Senior Lecturer at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University and since 1987 he has held over 35 solo exhibitions. 2007 was the 55th year of the Brisbane Dante’s continuous existence. With branches worldwide, our parent society in Rome, la sede centrale, was founded in 1889 on the inspiration of the great Nobel prize winning poet, Giosuè Carducci. Its two objectives at that time, that we and all branches still pursue, are to maintain and to resuscitate the use of Italian among Italians emigrants in foreign lands and also to diffuse the Italian language and culture among non-Italians.

Our Activities
Monthly Cultural EventsAcross the years these monthly encounters have ranged from concerts, theatre outings, lectures on Italy, past and present, Italian films (subtitled or not, according to need), music, art, cooking and so on. Cultural meetings usually take place in the 3rd. week of every month and are announced in the Dante News. English and Italian feature as the languages of presentation. We encourage initiatives from members outside the management committee to suggest ideas and speakers for functions.

Language and Culture Courses
For the Brisbane Dante, these represent the greatest expression of the Society’s aims and our most important commitment of time and effort. Courses for the most part are year long in duration with an additional intake of new students in Semester two. All levels of language are taught from Monday to Thursday in the evenings and on some mornings. Children's classes are also available. Great South East Story for Italian Week 2008

On Thursday the 20th of March 2008, The Great South East hosted by Sofie Formica filmed a special segment which features Italian Week and some of its protagonists. The episode will air Sunday 11th May at 5.30pm on The Great South East about two weeks before Italian Week commences and will be an excellent spot for the event.

The day started at La Dolce Vita where Sofie, Carole Horne ( producer) and Mark (cameraman) met with David Beard, owner of ‘Scary’ and member of the Lamborghini Club where we filmed the arrival and Sofie and I having a quick coffee before leaving for Sirianni’s at the Emporium to collect some ingredients for a picnic at New Farm Park.

We selected a number of items with the assistance of Tony Sirianni and then headed toward New Farm Park for our picnic.

At the Park, we were met by Peter Cupples and his daughter Georgia who performed a nice little serenade of an original piece that Peter wrote (in Italian).

Peter has written music in Italian and English and together with is daughter they do a great rendition – we are very excited to have them as part of Italian Week, they truly symbolise the spirit of Italian /Australian culture.

Sofie Interviewed Peter who gave some of his background as the partner to an Italian and how he has grown passionate toward all things Italian, he outlined that the sense of community and family was something that he appreciated very much and that his love of food and wine were well complimented within the range of the Italian culinary experience. Here you can see a little clip I filmed.

From New Farm Park we headed into the city centre to shoot the fashion section with Elio Moda. Widely known throughout the country for his design and style, Elio dressed Sofie in a couple of his outfits and chatted about fashion in general. In the meantime I walked out with a great suit and we headed for coffee and dolci to complete the day.

Our next and final destination was a tour of the kitchen and chat with Aladino from Dolci Sapori at Clayfield who discussed the Italian Pasticceria and how dolci are made. A very nice day showcasing the main features of Italian Week 2008.

The Gwydir Grove Story 1996-2007 The Gwydir Grove story started 11 years ago. The label began in Moree in North-West NSW in 1996. Two Moree women, Margi Kirkby and Jenni Birch bought themselves a second-hand olive press and harvested all the local olive trees they could find as their own newly planted olive trees were too young to be producing. Margi and Jenni began selling the oil in local shops under the name "Gwydir Grove".

As the business grew, other local growers came on board and formed the company Gwydir Olives Pty Ltd. The company was based in Inverell, NSW as the climatic conditions are better suited to storing oil. The state of the art factory opened in 1999.

Ten years later the Gwydir Grove brand is one of Australia’s leading premium olive oils.
Processing - The Gwydir Olives factory in Inverell NSW was officially opened in 1999 and the facility was heralded as being a significant addition to the Inverell district.

Built with Hebel concrete walls and an insulated roof, the temperature inside the factory remains low even on the hottest days.

The modules of the plant are linked by a central computerised work station. The factory manager is responsible for smooth operation during the processing season and maintains a very high standard of hygiene during production.

The plant is HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) accredited and maintains Organic Certification. The Alfa Laval processing plant was imported from Italy.

He was one of the founding directors of the HPV Properties Group. His career then progressed to the formation of Australian Capital Limited in 1998 whose activities are targeted at large scale property projects. Stephen remains as Chief Executive Officer of Australian Capital Limited and is the beneficial owner of 50% of the group together with related interests.

His activities bought him to invest in Queensland in the early 90s which led to his permanent relocation to Brisbane in 2000.

Exciting, Passionate, Dramatic, World-Class…..these are just a few words that have described the voice and performance of this talented australian-born tenor Rosario La Spina.

He is one of the finest young tenors to have emerged from within the opera world throughout the last few years. Though born in Australia, his Italian heritage is revealed with every aria performed. Rosario was trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Australia), and continued his studies at the ‘Royal Northern College of Music’, Manchester under the tutelage of Joseph Ward OBE. During this period, he performed the tenor solos in Handel’s Messiah, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater and Orff’s Carmina Burana. He also made guest appearances as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Bern Stadttheater and as soloist in Operatic Galas with the Ulster Orchestra, Belfast and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, Egypt.

Having gained first prize in the tenor competition held by L'Accademia di La Scala in 2000, Rosario embarked on the two-year Young Singers’ Course at La Scala, Milan, where he studied with Luciana Serra and Leyla Gencer. This culminated in his La Scala debut as the Messenger in Samson and Delilah, where he appeared with Placido Domingo and Olga Borodina.

In 2002, Rosario won first prize in the "Mario Del Monaco International Opera Competition" and made his principal role debut at La Scala as Riccardo in Verdi's Oberto, reprising the role in Genova. He also sang The Duke (Rigoletto) in Tuscany and Rodolfo (La Boheme) in Calabria.

2003 saw his debut at the Verdi Festival at the Teatro Regio di Parma as Arvino in "I Lombardi" – he also covered the role of Manrico (Il Trovatore) for Welsh National Opera and performed Alfredo (La Traviata) in Modena and Luigi (Il Tabarro) in Osaka, Japan. In 2004, he performed the role of The Duke at the Teatro Argentina of Rome and repeated the role for Opera New Zealand in both Auckland and Wellington.

Throughout the past few years, Opera Australia have engaged the services of Mr La Spina with lead performances in 'La Traviata, 'Turandot', 'Rusalka, 'Tales of Hoffman', 'Rigoletto' and 'Madame Butterfly'.

Debuting in 2007 for the Seattle Opera Company in America, Rosario performed the role of Rodolfo in 'La Boheme'. He has been invited to return in 2008, to sing in the role of Radames in "Aida".

Peter first came into prominence in 1975 as lead singer and songwriter for the blue-eyed soul band Stylus.

Stylus released four albums which included such hits as ‘Summer Breeze’ ‘World of Make Believe’ ‘So much Love’ and ‘Work out fine’ to name a few.

Stylus became the first all white band to be signed by U.S. Company Tamala Motown, and had moderate success internationally under the Motown banner.

Stylus split in 1980 and Peter went solo achieving a top twenty with his first release ‘Fear of Thunder’, ‘Blame it on the Weather’ was also a success not only for Peter, but also for John Farnham, as a part of his re-emergence. Peter became a regular on the Midday show after doing a song called ‘Happy Ending’ to close the Opening of the entertainment centre in Sydney, a channel nine spectacular.

Peter became a regular with all variety shows, ‘Hey Hey it’s Saturday’ ‘Tonight Live with Steve Visard’ ‘I.M.T’. ‘G.M.A.’ still today, and fifteen years of ‘Carols by Candlelight’ Christmas Eve at the Myer Music Bowl. Peter works with many charity’s, recently writing songs for the ‘Make a Wish foundation’ and the ‘Sacred Heart foundation’. Peter also wrote the song ‘Best of the Best’ for the racing hall of fame, and the kangaroo’s team of the century tribute.

On these film clips, Peter perfoms a number of classics and new material along with some great standards from artists such as Summer Breeze

Peter has done many main events, but none bigger than opening for Frank Sinatra at sanctuary cove.

He has written and recorded many albums over the years, and also has put Stylus back together from time to time for live shows, and in 2003 Stylus recorded a live album called ‘Still Alive’ in 2005 Peter released ‘Bac2Basix’ a real roots album with lots of wonderful story telling song, such as ‘Pioneers’ ‘Family’ and the ‘Poor mans Al Jolson’.

In 2006 Peter put a show together with friend and college Jon English called ‘Uncorked’ a wonderful show of nostalgia and good humour, which has been delighting audiences through out Australia.

In late 2007 Peter released ‘About Time’ an album of standards with some very fine original arrangements, once again to show his incredible versatility.

‘About Time’ was an instant success both here and over seas, with Peter going to Japan in November to perform at a large jazz festival, he is now in negotiations with other major jazz festivals around the world.

The Cupples story is one that is ever changing, the latest project Peter is working on, is a musical, so if the past is any indication of the future, this will be really something to look forward to.

Phillip Di Bella

At the age of 31, Phillip Di Bella leads Australia’s fastest growing coffee company.

In just four years he has founded and built up the company in one of the most competitive retail industries in Australia. This speed of growth was recognised in the 2006 BRW Fast 100 list where Di Bella Coffee debuted at number 23.

After 11 years in the business, Phillip followed his dream and started Di Bella coffee with only two wholesale clients. As a one-man band he roasted the coffee himself in one location, drove to another to type up invoices, stored his product somewhere else and then delivered the coffee himself.

Realising this system was impossible to grow the business, Phillip sold his home and purchased commercial premises. Living in a spare office, Phillip worked 120-hour weeks to build up his client base of supplying product to retail coffee shops.

Phillip fought off a price war and the coffee “old boys club” with sheer hard work, his commitment to the finest quality coffee and high levels of customer service.

He took the business to the next level with the bold move of going to the market directly by selling coffee at Jan Power’s Farmer’s Market at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

By directly meeting the coffee lovers of Brisbane who attend the market, Phillip built the reputation of his six blends. The word of mouth method worked and coffee drinkers demanded his product from their favourite coffee outlets.

At the same time, he opened his own retail outlet at the premises in Bowen Hills where his coffee was roasted and blended. His clients would buy their grinds as well as enjoy a fresh brew.

Phillip had now firmly established a wholesale coffee business to cafes and retail supply direct from his own café and over the internet.

As his market share grew, he then expanded into the highly competitive ‘south-centric’ Melbourne and Sydney markets.

A lean operation, he was able to ensure top quality coffee at competitive prices and continue his personal hands-on approach to service.

Phillip then expanded the Di Bella experience to include all related products such as sugar and powdered chocolate, and a full range of machines and accessories.

His next step was to provide coffee training to the industry, home machine owners and coffee lovers. Barista training, master classes and workshops are conducted regularly at Bowen Hills.

Phillip then added other services, such as a full machine maintenance program and a real estate division to source suitable cafe properties.

His employee base has expanded from one (himself) to twenty-two staff including brand managers in Melbourne and Tasmania.

His investment in the company has increased with the purchase of a state of the art packaging machine that assembles, fills and dates the product. Di Bella coffee plans to invest in more advanced European technology to further perfect the art of coffee.

The growth and success of Di Bella Coffee has been recognised with a host of business and community awards. In 2006, Phillip was one of only four to have a presence on both BRW Magazine’s Fast 100 and Young Rich lists. Despite his extensive personal achievements, Phillip believes the success of his company is due to the commitment of his staff, whom he rewards with a generous incentive program.

Although his business success is a major triumph for the son of Italian immigrants, Phillip takes most pride in having the resources to give back to the community and educate others. He sponsors four children in the Philippines and enjoys fundraising and motivational efforts at disadvantaged schools. Di Bella supplies all coffee to Café One (Wickham Street, Brisbane), run by Mission Australia for disadvantaged and homeless people. Phillip also provides an advisory service and barista training to staff.

Di Bella coffee now supplies to over 600 café outlets, its own signature café Vue in New Farm, Extract in the city, and one million cups of his coffee are enjoyed each week.

Lorenzo Spezzamonte and Massimo Bortolazzo have brought authentic Italian cuisine all the way from Venice to Brisbane, Australia.

Arriving in 2002 Lorenzo and Massimo have together created a unique fine dining experience. Some of you may have had the pleasure of tasting Lorenzo's fresh pasta, made every day.
"Viale Canova" is set to score full marks, not only for the food, but also for the friendly service and special atmosphere. The candlelit restaurant has an intimate and homely feel, similar to a family dining room, with beautiful artwork on its walls supplied by Oriel Gallery.

Soft music plays in the background. There may be a harpist, there may be a Carnivale, a fashion show or a masked evening - you never know what will happen next, but keep in touch to find out what special events are taking place.

This small Italian Restaurant, tucked away on Sandgate Road in Clayfield, is a gorgeous feast for all the senses. Opening just more than two years ago by two Italians hailing from a little town called Borso del Grappa, Viale Canova has quickly established a name for itself among gourmands and food critics. The atmosphere in the restaurant is extravagant yet homely, with tasteful works of art gracing the walls, soft candlelight and chandeliers. The service is
exceptionally friendly without being stifling.

The creations in the kitchen are care of chef Lorenzo, who uses his extensive experience in the fine food arena to create traditional Italian dishes using quality Australian produce. Bread to start is mandatory and exquisite – nothing beats a freshly baked loaf, especially when it is topped with moist bocconcini, tomato and oregano. Next the sliced baked rabbit topped with truffle sauce is robust and delicious, while the homemade fettuccine with Moreton
Bay bugs and Italian porcini mushrooms in a white wine sauce completes the meal. Lorenzo is famed for his selection of risottos and pastas, but the menu also boasts a variety of meat and fish dishes.

Headed by chef Lorenzo Spezzamonte, the food is rich and authentic, with only the freshest of ingredients used and everything prepared on site that day. The service is also authentically Italian, with business partner Massimo Bortolazzo, who hails from the north of Italy, in charge of the front of house.

The restaurant is divided into two. Inside, the look is classical with pale floor tiles, white and red walls, high-backed wooden chairs and plenty of modern art. A small courtyard out the back offers candlelit, white-clothed tables with elegant wrought-iron chairs.

Ballandean Estate Wines is without doubt an Icon in the Queensland Wine Industry. Acclaimed for their hospitality by the Tourism Industry, Ballandean Estate is a member of the Queensland Tourism Hall of Fame. Since opening their cellar door in 1970 almost 700 wine medals have been won.

The tradition of winemaking on Ballandean Estate was first established in 1930, when Mr Salvatore Cardillo brought his family to settle in the Stanthorpe area. With the flood of Italian immigrants who settled in certain parts of Queensland in the first half of the century came many customs and values from the homeland… including a love of good food and wine.

Salvatore planted some table grapes on his farm, and from these made quantities of bulk red wine, some of which he sold locally. When his son-in-law, Mr Alfio Puglisi, took over the farm in 1941, this practice continued.

When Angelo and Mary Puglisi took over the farm from Angelos’ parents in 1968, they saw the potential for a new industry in the area and decided to make wine commercially. Angelo and Mary replanted the vineyard, moving from table grapes to several varieties of wine grapes. These were the first wine grapes to be planted on the Granite Belt and to this day, produce the finest quality grapes in the state. A modest beginning for this now multi-million dollar industry.
Today Ballandean Estate produces some 18 styles of wine, from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to Shiraz, Tawny Port and alternative (Strangebird) varieties such as Viognier and Sylvaner. Each of these styles has been rewarded with medals from the many International, National and Regional Shows entered each year.

The winemaking equipment and expertise of staff are utilised by other Queensland wineries for their own production. Ballandean Estate holds contracts with 2 wine producers around the state for the processing of grapes to wine. The winery boasts the oldest working barrels in the state, these 130 year old relics grace the Barrel Room Café with their overwhelming presence. Ballandean Estate can crush up to 500 tonne. Each year Ballandean Estate stages one of the largest cultural events on the Southern Downs, that is ‘Opera in the Vineyard’. This event presented jointly with the Stanthorpe Rotary Club, attracted 1500 guests in 2007. The outdoor concert was staged in the landscaped venue overlooking the beauty of the vineyard and nearby National Park. This widely acclaimed, annual charity event was held for the 15th time in 2007 and benefits many Queensland charities. In 15 years, we have raised many hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. Added to the repertoire of functions is Jazz in the Vineyard held in October and Priscilla in the Vineyard held in March/April each year.

As a tourist destination, Ballandean Estate has much to offer. The Barrel Room Café offers casual dining and is situated within the winery complex and offers a variety sumptuous meals. The café is open every day. Ballandean Estates most outstanding feature is the commitment of the family to excellence. As a team, the Puglisi family is committed to building a successful business, increasing awareness of the industry and promoting the region by organising events that attract large numbers of tourists and encourage them to return again and again. Individually, members of the family are representatives on local and regional wine and tourism committees that assist in promotion and expansion of the region. As substantiation of their commitment, Angelo and Mary Puglisi were presented with a Tourism Ambassador Award in 1998. In 2003, Angelo Puglisi was awarded as a Queensland Great, during the Queensland Week Celebrations.

The winery employs 14 permanent staff including vineyard, winemaking, cellar, café and administration staff. The Puglisi family who operate the business are Angelo and Mary Puglisi, along with the daughters and son-in-laws, Leeanne and Mario Gangemi and Robyn and Ian Henderson.

The winery is open 7 days per week and offers every tourist: Complimentary vineyard tours, Complimentary winery tours, Complimentary tasting, Casual dining in the Barrel Room Café every day, All inclusive catering for functions and tour groups.

Over the past 30 years, the company has grown in leaps and bounds and has contributed greatly towards enhancing the image and reputation of Queensland wines in both the domestic and international markets.

Situated 250km South-west of Brisbane on Queenslands’ Granite Belt, Ballandean is the area’s largest and oldest winery. Angelo Puglisi’s ancestors first made wine on the site in 1931 and Angelo and Mary and their family now continue the tradition. From 1974 to the present day Ballandean Estate has received an enviable array of awards which now adorn the walls of the tasting room.

Ballandean Estate’s national and international recognition for the production of a quality range of wines is for this family based operation just the beginning. Today, modern growing, production and management techniques are being embraced by the Puglisi family.

A total of 80 acres from two separate properties is still hand picked and every bunch is carefully examined before being processed. This attention to quality control is certainly demonstrated in our products.

The vineyards are 840 metres above sea level and the Granite Belt enjoys summers with low humidity and bracing winters with frosts and the occasional snowfall. Our high country climate ensures that our wines are uniquely Granite Belt.

Young virtuoso pianist and composer to appear at Italian Week Concert

15 old Brisbane-based pianist and composer, Alex Raineri will join a number of internationally acclaimed artists appearing at the Italian Week celebration concert at the Southbank Suncorp Piazza on 1 June 2008.

Alex is also a 2008 finalist in the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards, Australia's most prestigious competition for young Australian performers under the age of 30. Alex will play Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Queensland Orchestra at the Queensland Conservatorium Theatre on 13th June 2008, commencing at 7.30pm. Alex has won many local and national performance and composition awards. In addition, in 2007, Alex was the first young artist selected internationally for a tour of Australia and America with the “Castles and Cathedrals” program. Alex performed in Brisbane, Melbourne and various cities in California, USA. While on tour, Alex was invited to discuss his compositions at a guest lecture/masterclass at California State University at Chico.

Alex has recorded a number of CDs, including When Poets Dreamed (a compilation of neo romantic pieces and own compositions), Tangent (a collaboration with a number of Australian vocalists) and Shadow Sketches (original compositions). A new CD, Shadow Dancing, which will contain original works, is currently being compiled. He has also performed and recorded with Australian vocalists Leah Purcell, Evelyn Duprai, Isis Ashton and Jodi Phillis.

Alex was the subject of a television feature story on Australian ABC television’s The 7.30 Report (2006) and Sunday Arts (2007) and has also appeared on Channel 10’s 9AM show with David and Kim in October 2007. A Canadian-Australian, Susan Parisi's long standing love affair with the Italian culture began when she married an Italian-Australian and was immediately swept up in the passion and love-of-life of a large Italianfamily.

Fascinated by all things Italian, it's no surprise that a particularly intense trip to Italy was the inspiration for her first novel, Blood of Dreams. A murder-mystery set during Carnevale season 18th century Venice, Blood of Dreams is a story of obsession, intrigue and betrayal.

Nominated for fivemajor awards, Blood of Dreams won an Aurealis Award for speculative fictionin January 2008.

Her next book, Mosaic, is a conspiracy-thriller set inRome and Palermo.

"I've got to admit, it was an unconventional upbringing," Susan comments."In a family with complete indifference to mainstream values and opinions you made up your own rules of conduct. It definitely gave me a sense of being an outsider and observer - a perspective not uncommon among writers.

But the odd thing is, I didn’t write . . . I loved reading but was obsessed with painting and sketching from a very early age and wanted to be a book illustrator or portrait artist. The possibility of becoming a writer never even featured . . ." Craving stability after something of a harum-scarum upbringing, Susan went to university, studied psychology (clearly an ironical touch), got an honest job, married and became part of her husband’s large and vibrant Italian-Australian family. But the legacy of delinquent parents ran deep.

Most of Susan's working life was spent contemplating the idea that there had to be more to life. In between a variety of jobs, Susan spent her time renovating houses with her husband, pursuing her lifelong love of painting and sketching and nurturing a growing passion for Italy and the Italian culture.

Although an ardent reader and film-goer, the idea of channeling her restless creative energy into writing stories still had not entered her head.

La possibilità di diventare una scrittrice non era mai comparsa...desiderare ardentemente la stabililtà dopo un'educazione famigliare avventata, Susan andò all'università, studiò psicologia ( chiaramente un pizzico di ironia), ricevette un onesto lavoro e diventò sposandosi parte della larga e stimolante famiglia italiana-australiana del marito. Ma l'eredità di dilinquenza dei genitori rimase profonda.

La maggior parte dei lavori "di vita" di Susan furono spesi contemplando l'idea che la vita doveva essere molto di più di quello che lei aveva ricevuto. Tra la varietà dei suoi lavori, Susan spese il suo tempo rinnovando/restaurando case con suo marito, continuando il suo amore costante per la pittura e lo sketching, nutrendo un passione sempre più crescente per l'Italia e la cultura italiana.

Sebastian Di Mauro is a Senior Lecturer at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Since 1987 he has held over 35 solo exhibitions. His work has been included in excess of 90 group exhibitions and has been exhibited in Australia and overseas. His paintings, sculptures, artist books and installations are featured in the collections of many of Australia's key art institutions, including the Queensland Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park (Victoria), Besen Collection and Artbank (Sydney and Melbourne).

In September 1998, Between Material, an account of his work to date, was launched and his work was exhibited in Enjoin in Manila. Di Mauro received a ‘New Work’ grant in 1999 from the Australia Council to develop an installation of sculpture for Brisbane City Gallery in 2000.

He won the Inaugural Woollahra Sculpture Prize and his work was selected for the National Sculpture Prize and Exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia in 2001. In 2003 his work was selected for the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award and Exhibition. And was a finilist in The McClelland Survey and Award 2003, McClelland Gallery, Langwarrin, Victoria. He won the 2003 Montalto Sculpture Prize (Mornington Peninsular, Victoria). Sebastian was awarded a residency with Parks Victoria, Melbourne in 2002, 2003 through the Conrad Jupiters Art Prize, Gold Coast City Gallery, and received a residency at the British School, Rome through the Australia Council in 2002.

Di Mauro has completed several public art commissions. His first commission was completed for 175 Eagle Street, Brisbane in 2002. He has also undertaken the largest single public art commission to date for 33 Charlotte Street, Brisbane and created an artwork for the Brisbane Magistrates Court, Queensland. He has collaborated with architect Alice Hampson on several public art projects including Logan Community Health Centre and Gabba Members Area (Gabba Cricket Ground). Di Mauro recently completed a commission for Taylor, Cullity and Lethlean Landscape Architects in Adelaide.

Dolci Sapori evolved over a cup of coffee between Mario Cali and Aladino Pozzebon discussing Brisbane's food and hospitality industry. At that time both were recently migrated from Italy and noted the lack of an authentic Italian patisserie.

This was obvious to Mario, who was born and bred in the industry thanks to his father's sixty years experience as a pastry chef and café proprietor. Mario himself worked in all facets of his father's business, from serving customers to managing the business.

Aladino noted there was no place to experience a typical Italian breakfast: an on-the run espresso with a freshly baked pastry while finding out last night's soccer result. His years in hotel and restaurant management and working on cruise liners highlighted that the missing ingredient was a café that had its own identity rather that one that tried to be all things to all people.
And from that simple cup of coffee "Dolci Sapori" was born.

Aladino and Mario had no trouble coming up with a menu – they just wanted to provide a good product that would bring people to see, taste, smell and experience a real Italian ambience, without the expense of flying to Italy. However, coming up with a name for the business was another matter! Eventually they decided to appeal to the senses: Dolci meaning sweet, for the sweet tastes and life; and Sapori meaning flavours, of which there are many on offer.

The Clayfield shop opened for trading in 2001 and has attracted a loyal following from all parts of Brisbane. And then there are those who stop in on their way to the airport to collect a box of sweets to take home … to north Queensland, interstate and overseas. It was here that customers discovered the custom of brioche and granita for breakfast, arancini for a savoury snack, ricotta cannoli with coffee and ordering a gift box of mixed pastries for friends and family.

Well on their way to converting local foodies to the sweet side of Italy, Clayfield based patisserie Dolci Sapori offers customers a mouth watering selection of traditional Italian desserts. So authentic, you could almost imagine being served these delicious bites straight from nonna’s kitchen.

All desserts are hand crafted daily on the premises by Mario Cali, a second generation pastry chef who learnt his skills under the tutelage of his father Nino Cali.

‘My father is a great man and a wonderful chef, who even at 82 years of age is still running a traditional Italian patisserie in his native town of Piedimonte Etneo in Sicily’ said Mario.

Mario and his business partner Aladino Pozzebon’s Italian heritage and passion is combined with over half a decade of hospitality experience to bring Brisbane locals an authentic array of traditional and boutique style desserts.

‘We’ve heard straight from the horses mouth that our traditional desserts are the perfect accompaniment to a steaming cup of strong Italian coffee’ said Aladino.

‘One of Dolci Sapori’s biggest supporters is coffee guru Phillip Di Bella, who was so enamoured with the combination of sweets and coffee that he named one of his signature blends after us!’
Dolci Sapori even caters for those rare souls without a sweet tooth, offering a range of savoury treats including traditional Italian favourites vol-au-vents, ‘Arancini’ (filled risotto balls) and, of course, the ‘Pizzette’ (pizza).

Dolci Sapori si è evoluta da una tazza di caffè tra le discussioni di Mario Cali e Aladino Pozzebon sul cibo di Brisbane e l'ospitalità dell'industria. Al tempo entrambi erano da poco migrati dall'Italia e notarono la mancanza di un autentica patisserie italiana.

He will be accompanied by high officials of Tuscany and by the Director of Toscana Promozione, the regional agency who is responsible for the touristic, economic and commercial promotion of Tuscany.

The Hon. Martini being a well-known figure in the world of Italian national politics, is also President of the "Forum of Networks of World Regions", a standing structure designed to bring together Regions from throughout the world to make their voice heard in a global world.

During his visit the Hon Martini, escorted by the Consul of Italy in Brisbane, Francesco Capecchi will be meeting the Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh, the Hon. Grace Grace, the only member of the Queensland Parliament of Italian descent and will participate to a meeting hosted by the Commonwealth Bank manager for QLD, Mark Toon, on business investment opportunity in Queensland.

Thursday will end with a dinned hosted by the Consul of Italy, and the President of the Tuscans abroad for QLD and NT, Luciano Servadio, at the Italian restaurant Dell’Ugo with the presence of the deputy Mayor of Brisbane, Counsellor David Hinchcliffe, high representatives of the Italian Community in Brisbane and personalities of the economic and cultural world.

Biographical profile

Claudio Martini was born in Tunisia at Bardo, a suburb of the capital on January 10th,1951. He has a brother who was regional secretary of the CGIL trade union for 8 years and a younger sister. He has a 35 years old son, and in July 2006 he got married for the second time.
The Martini family resided originally in the Leghorn area, but moved to Tunisia at the end of the
19th century as his great-grandfather was an anarchist and could not find work in his home country.

President Martini is bilingual: he speaks and writes both Italian and French, having attended
French-speaking schools as a child, as well as a little Arab. He was ten years old when his family
decided to return to Tuscany at the beginning of the 1960s. His father, an expert accountant, was employed by a Prato company in the early period of the city’s textile boom. After junior high
school and an important boy-scout experience, he enrolled at the Buzzi Technical Institute, a highly reputed vocational training school for chemical technicians. Here he encountered politics for the first time. His activity in the student movement brought him to a more important commitment inthe Communist Youth Federation and afterwards in the party.

Though politics became the dominant note, the young Martini found time for other passions which became vital life constants: music: classical music first of all, but jazz and rock as well; and sports: bicycling at the top of the list, but basketball and soccer too as a supporter of the Florentine team.

Alongside Mozart and the “Fiorentina”, there has always been a place for literature and cinema.
When the workload permits, he still enjoys bicycling along Tuscan country roads, playing a good
game of chess and navigating on Internet.

Before tackling high-level responsibilities at the Tuscan Region, Claudio Martini was well-known
in the world of politics for his service as the Mayor of Prato from 1988 to 1995. During these years of crucial importance for the launching of the Province of Prato, he promoted several important projects: the University of Florence facilities in his city, the ionization of the water purification plant, the city’s industrial aqueduct, the Pecci Museum of Contemporary Art, urban renewal and restoration in Prato’s historical centre. One of the initiatives as Mayor of Prato for which he feels a special pride was the Pact of Friendship sealed with the City of Sarajevo, a commitment which has rewarded him with a lifetime honorary citizenship.

Elected to the Regional Council for the first time in 1995 as a candidate of the Partito Democratico della Sinistra; Martini was assigned the important job of Assessor for Health and Welfare. In the course of his term he was responsible for the approval of two regional health plans which have made the revamping of regional health services possible through the development of dehospitalisation policies and the improvement of local services and other initiatives aimed at promoting public and individual health. Several regional laws were passed under Martini’s supervision to streamline the organization of health services in Tuscany and, above all, to progressively eliminate a serious regional health service deficit.

In September 2002, and again in 2004, he was nominated President of the Conference of Remote Maritime Regions in Europe when he had already served as a member of the President’s office. In March 2007 he was nominated President of the "Forum of Networks of World Regions", a standing structure designed to bring together Regions from throughout the world to make their voice heard in a global world.

Fervently committed to the issues of globalisation, he is the driving force behind the meeting,
"From global to glocial", held each year since 2001 in Pisa’s San Rossore national park. His first
book, Un nuovo mondo globale. Da New York a San Rossore (A new global world. From New York to San Rossore), was published in 2002. The second, Capaci di sognare, was published in 2003; the third, Cambiare aria al mondo, in 2005.

Olga Zdorenko Landi graduated in 1994 in piano at the ''Tchaikovskij'' Academy of Music in Moscow with E. Malinin and in 2001 with S. Perticaroli at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. She has won awards at several international piano competitions and has performed in the most prestigious European concert halls.

Olga Zdorenko was born in Kiev in Ukraine.

In 1994 she received her degree in piano with the highest grades and honors from the Ciaikovskij Conservatory of Moscow under the guidance of Eugeni Malinin.
She perfected her art with Rudolf Buchbinder, Viktor Merjianov and Hans Graaf. In 2001 she graduated with Sergio Perticaroli from the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy. with the highest grades.

She has won awards in numerous international competitions such as: “Young Russian Talents”, “Carlo Zecchi” of Rome, the “Golden Palm” of Finale Ligure, “The Sulmona Competition”, “The San Remo Classic”, The “Carlo Soliva”.

She has performed concerts at the most important European theatres such as: The Kammermusiksaal of the Philharmonic of Berlin, The Grand Hall Ciaikovskij of Moscow, The Odeon Theatre of Athens, the Eliseo Theatre of Rome, The Olimpico Theatre of Rome, The Theatre “Le Ciminiere” of Catania, The Pleyel Hall of Paris, The Cathedral of Taormina, The Auditorium of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, The Philharmonic of Kiev and The Conservatory of Naples S. Pietro at Maiella.
She has been invited to perform at numerous Festivals, including The Faust Festival of Basilea, The International Festival of Villa Giulia in Rome, The Concert Series “Jenuesse-Musical” at the Philharmonic of Klagenfurt, The Piano Series of the Rome Philharmonic, The Festival “Horovitz” of Kiev, The Festival “Per La Pace” of Sarajevo.

She has collaborated with some of the most important European Orchestras: The Philharmonic Orchestra of Moscow, The Symphonic Orchestra of State of Kiev, The Symphonic Orchestra of Sarajevo, The Philharmonic Orchestra of Klagenfurt, The Orchestra Verdi of Milan, The Camera Orchestra of The Academy of S.Cecilia, The Philharmonic Orchestra of Meklenberg, and with The Orchestra of Radio and Television of Zagabria.

In the sphere of Camera Music she has collaborated with the violinist Pavel Bermann and with the cellist Rodolfo Bonucci.

In 2005 she collaborated with the soloists of The Berlin Philharmonic for the project “Mahler Academy” under the artistic direction of Claudio Abbado.
Olga Zdorenko is constantly invited as a soloist and in camera groups, in many European countries, including Austria, France, Germany, Greece, England, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and Ucraine.

L’ITALIA DEL PATTINAGGIO ARTISTICO DOMINA I MONDIALI IN CORSO DI SVOLGIMENTO NELLA GOLD COAST (BRISBANE)

Domenica scorsa, 4 novembre, l’Onorevole Sabatino Aracu, deputato del Parlamento Italiano dal 1996 e attuale Presidente della Federazione Internazione pattinaggio a rotelle (FIRS), giunto in Australia con una folta delegazione della Federazione Internazionale e della Federazione italiana hockey e pattinaggio (FIHP), ha aperto, con un richiamo ai veri valori dello sport, i campionati mondiali di pattinaggio a rotelle presso lo sport complex di Carrara (Gold Coast). Oltre al Presidente Aracu, erano presenti alla suggestiva cerimonia il Sindaco della Gold Coast Ron Clarke, il Console d’Italia in Brisbane, Francesco Capecchi ed un folto pubblico di appassionati.

Preme ricordare che il pattinaggio a rotelle è da sempre uno degli sport più medagliati per l‘Italia e che le grandi potenzialita’ dei 171 atleti italiani, gia’ nei primi giorni stanno emergendo. Nella prima fase dei campionati, quella riservata alla categoria juniores e alla solo dance, il bottino di medaglie per i nostri atleti è stato a dir poco eccezionale. Sette ori, tre argenti e tre bronzi sono un attestato inequivocabile di una supremazia che nessun altra nazionale è in grado di mettere in discussione.

Le qualità dei nostri atleti in uno sport che in Italia vanta 10 milioni di praticanti (nella maggior parte amatori) sono emerse sin dalla prima giornata, nella specialità degli obbligatori maschili e femminili. Nella gara maschile il podio più alto è stato conquistato dall’atleta romagnolo Andrea Poli, mentre il bronzo è andato all’altro azzurro Marco Cantucci. Andrea Poli ha condotto una gara regolare meritandosi il titolo davanti all’atleta tedesco Clad ed al campione del mondo 2006 Marco Santucci.

Fra le ragazze Michela Atzori, al suo primo mondiale, ha lottato per i primi posti, e alla fine è salita sul terzo gradino del podio, alle spalle della statunitense Brittany Adams, mentre l’oro, anche quest’anno, è stato vinto dall’atleta tedesca Julia Woyciechowski, già campionessa mondiale 2006.

La seconda giornata ha visto in pista le atlete della Solo Dance, nel programma libero, dove le azzurre Martina Tosini e Valeria Zorzin, in un testa a testa, si sono aggiudicate rispettivamente la medaglia di bronzo ed il 4° posto, dietro alle fortissime atlete statunitensi.

Nella finale delle Coppie Danza infine ha prevalso la coppia Giannelli/Brun che ha condotto una gara brillante e corretta dall’inizio alla fine conquistando la medaglia d’oro davanti alle coppie statunitensi. Quarti la coppia La Neve/Campagna che ha concluso con una buona prestazione il programma libero.

Nella terza giornata le gare più attese, quelle il libero maschile e femminile, che si sono concluse con un trionfo italiano. Oro per Marco Santucci e argento di Andrea Poli, fra i maschi, seguiti dall’atleta francese Garcia Frederic. La perfomarce ha regalato ai nostri anche i primi due posti nella combinata. Oro a Andrea Poli, argento a Marco Santucci e bronzo al tedesco Markus Lell.

La gara è stata molto avvincente ed emozionante dall’inizio alla fine anche perché l’atleta francese si è dimostrato un avversario ostico. C’è voluta tutta la classe e l’intelligenza dei nostri tecnici per permettere ai nostri ragazzi di esprimere al meglio le qualità indiscusse di cui sono dotati.

Nel libero femminile la star è stata, come previsto, Debora Sbei che ha vinto con grande sicurezza su tutto il lotto delle avversarie. Terzo posto per l’altra italiana Cristina Trani risalita,con un incredibile rimonta dall’11° posto dello short program fino a conquistare la medaglia di bronzo.

Supremazia delle coppie italiane anche nella gara coppie artistico dove Binotto/Lanzanova hanno conquistato l’oro con un programma privo di errori e pattinando in maniera molto scorrevole.

L’altra coppia Squadrani/De Gregorio si è aggiudicata la medaglia d’argento eseguendo un ottimo programma sotto il profilo tecnico.

Concluse le fatiche degli junior sabato pomeriggio si è svolto il 1° Campionato del Mondo della categoria Piccoli Gruppi Show e Grandi Gruppi Show.

Fra i piccoli gruppi l’Italia si è fatta onore con i due gruppi Division e Evolution, che hanno presentato degli ottimi programmi, indubbiamente rivisti e molto migliorati, rispetto a quelli presentati ai campionati italiani ed hanno ottenuto rispettivamente il 5° ed il 6° posto, mentre il podio più alto è stato conquistato da un gruppo spagnolo.
Piccola delusione per le aspettative di tecnici ed atleti che puntavano ad un piazzamento migliore.

Nella gara dei grandi gruppi vi è stata una grande battaglia tra i gruppi spagnoli, italiani ed argentini Alla fine si è riconfermato campione del mondo il gruppo spagnolo di Olot. Piazza d’onore per il gruppo Italiano Antitesi che ha presentato “Ribellion”. Terzo posto per gli argentini. Appena un gradino sotto il podio il nostro gruppo Cristal che ha presentato “il nobile gioco degli scacchi”. Anche in questa categoria il livello tecnico è stato molto elevato e i gruppi italiani, con coreografie e costumi molto originali, sono stati apprezzati ed applauditi calorosamente da tutto il pubblico presente.

Una grande soddisfazione è arrivata, infine, per la nostra nazionale, da Silvia Marangoni che per il secondo anno consecutivo, ha guadagnato il gradino più alto del podio nella specialità dell’ In Line. Silvia, al termine di una prova molto entusiasmante e agonisticamente difficile, in quanto partiva dalla seconda posizione dello Short program, ha recuperato lo svantaggio sull’atleta australiana Kristen Slade strappandole la medaglia d’oro.

Nella gara dei Gruppi Sincronizzato sfortunata la prova del Gruppo Albinea. Al termine del programma, un guasto tecnico ha provocato la caduta di un’atleta che ha trascinato gli altri componenti del gruppo, fatto questo che determinato la conseguente penalizzazione nel secondo punteggio. L’altro squadra in gara, “Sincroroller”, ha presentato un programma nuovo con un Gruppo molto rinnovato. Il terzo Gruppo “Rhegium” era al suo esordio ad un Campionato del Mondo e non ha sfigurato.

Delhi celebrates Italian language week

New Delhi, Oct 24, (IANS) Italian Language Week is being celebrated in the capital, as in other parts of the world, through film screenings, photography exhibitions and lectures under the theme 'Italian Language and the Sea'.

Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute, the celebrations began Monday and will stress on the intermingling of cultures through the chosen theme.

'It is a week-long celebration in the world at different Italian institutes and embassies,' Patrizia Raveggi, director of the cultural institute here, said late Tuesday.

The sea has been chosen as the focal point of this year's theme because a large part of Italy's history was based on the sea. The sea has inspired poets and artists from many parts of the world, has dictated joyful and melancholic songs to its inhabitants through its various moods.
Patrizia said intermingling of cultures had gained importance in today's world.
'Mixing of different cultures has become very important as it teaches a lot about (each other), helps an individual to grow in terms of education and in finding them better job opportunities,' she said.

The cultural week will include an exhibition of photographs by the Italian Geographical society, Rome, screening of Italian films, lectures and a tribute to late opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who died earlier this year.

The University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia, will also be hosting events marking the Italian Language Week celebrations.

7th “Italian Language Week Worldwide”

The Italian Language and the Sea (22– 28 October 2007) “The Italian Language and the Sea” is the theme of the 7th “Italian Language Week Worldwide”, which will be taking place from 22 to 28 October 2007. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the network of Embassies, Consulates, Italian Cultural Institutes, university departments of Italian, and Italian schools abroad.

The initiative, which enjoys the patronage of the President of the Republic, has since 2001 been the main international event promoting the Italian language. It has grown ever-more successful, with 1300 events in 80 countries for the 2006 edition. The Accademia della Crusca, which provides specialist advice and input, the Dante Alighieri Society and the RAI broadcasting corporation, with a focus on Rai International and Rai Educational, also cooperate closely in organising the “Week”.

Why devote the 7th edition of the Language Week to the sea? Because Italy’s sea has inspired artists and poets the world over. It has encouraged explorers and seen millions of Italians set forth for far-off lands in search of fortune. The history of Italy has largely been built on the sea, from the colonies of Magna Graecia to the Maritime Republics. And through the sea, the Italian language has acted as a bridge playing a vital role in spreading a knowledge and appreciation of Italy abroad.

Number of Foreigners Learning Italian RisesThe Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo comes at an auspicious time for the Italian language. According to a recent study, there has been an increase in the number of people outside Italy studying Italian. In the last five years, the number of foreign students studying Italian at cultural institutes has increased by almost 40%. And, according to the university La Sapienza of Rome, the number of pages in Italian on the Internet has also increased to 3.96% of the total. Although Italian ranks nineteenth in the world for the number of persons who speak it, the data shows that Italian is in roughly fourth or fifth position in the number of courses attended by foreign students.

Much of the increase in demand has come from commerce, industry and tourism. However, traditional motivations for learning the language remain: Italian is still considered a language of culture and also a way for Italian immigrants to maintain contacts and ties with their distant homeland.

7th week of Italian language opened in Astana

Italian language and sea has been opened today in the National Academic Library in Astana, Kazinform correspondent reports.

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Italy to Kazakhstan Bruno Pasquino took part in opening the event.

“The week of the Italian language is being held in Kazakhstan for the second time. The opening of an exhibitions on 'Salgari Sea' (Italian writer) and 'Amerigo Vespucchi' (ship) took place within the frame of the week,” he said.

An Italian film will be demonstrated within the frame of the event.

UNE celebrates 'Italian and the Sea'October 23, 2007

The University of New England is participating in a world-wide celebration of the Italian language and Italian culture this week.

The theme of this year's celebration – the seventh annual Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo ("Week of Italian Language in the World") – is "Italian and the Sea".

The Italian Section in UNE's School of Arts has organised a half-day program of short illustrated talks, Italian music, poetry, food and wine, and finally an Italian feature film, on Thursday 25 October in Arts Lecture Theatre A2, beginning at 1 pm. Everyone is welcome to this free public event.

Benjamin Thorn and Cecile Michels will perform the music on authentic instruments (ocarinas, recorders and harp), and illustrated talks by Eric Acheson and Anna Cavallaro will evoke the maritime history and architectural splendour of Sicily.

Brennan Wales (Convener of Italian at UNE) will give some short poetry recitations, two students will read brief, sea-inspired Italian compositions of their own, and another student will sing an early 17th century love song with a sea-related theme.

Refreshments, served at 2 pm, will be followed by the screening of the film Mediterraneo (directed by G. Salvatores) – a romantic drama set on a Mediterranean island during World War II.

Short addresses by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Pettigrew, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Professor Margaret Sedgley, and the Head of the School of Arts, Associate Professor Kerry Dunne, will begin the program at 1 pm. Brennan Wales said that UNE's participation in this year's "Week of Italian Language in the World" was made possible – as in previous years – by the generous support of the Italian Consulate General in Sydney. "Our relationship with the Consulate continues to be a very productive one," he said, "and is of great benefit to us and our students."

Italian Government Awards Cuban Professor

Havana, Oct 23 (acn) As part of the 7th International Week of the Italian Language, the Government of that European nation will bestow the Star of the Italian Solidarity Order on Regla Arango Polanco, Cuban professor at the University of Havana.

Commercial and cultural counselor at the Italian Embassy in Havana, Marco Giomini, said this decoration is awarded every year by the Italian President.

The official ceremony will take place in Salon 250 of the University of Havana, where the Italian ambassador in Cuba, Domenico Vecchioni, will invest Arango Polanco, who is also General Coordinator of the Postgraduate Course on the Italian Language and Culture, with the First Degree Knighthood.

Giomini noted that the Italian Foreign Minister, along with the Academia della Cruzca, have organized a program of activities throughout this week to take place at the University of Havana, the Dante Alighieri Society, Ruben Martinez Villena Library, and the Havana Historian’s Office.

The week, called "The Italian and the sea", will run until Sunday 28.
It will include talks, lectures and the screening of films that will be donated later to the bibliographic funds of the Dante Alighieri Society in Havana.

Giomini also said Cuba is putting the finishing touches on the program of the 10th Italian Culture Week in Cuba, which this year will be dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi on the occasion of his 200th birthday.

Tbilisi Celebrates ‘VII Week of Italian Language and Culture in the World’

“Our main goal is to satisfy the thrust for Italian language,” said Ambassador of Italy to Georgia, Vittorio Sandalli, at a news conference on October 19. The Week for Italian Language and Culture in the World is held annually worldwide with Georgia participating every year as well. This is the 7th week of the event.

The Italian embassy to Georgia organized the event in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland, and the Georgian Ministry of Culture, Monuments and Sports. “The Italian Language and the Sea” is this year’s theme, chosen by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sandalli said, “We have picked this motto because for us – Italians– the sea is a very sensitive and most important topic. The sea almost surrounds our country and we don’t just use it for commercial purposes. The sea has given Italians a way to access any place in the world in search of happy life.”

According to the embassy, for the VII annual Week of Italian Language and Culture in the World a number of events will be held at different cultural and educational sites in downtown Tbilisi. The week will open on Monday at the Tbilisi History Museum Karvasla at 6pm, with the photo exhibit “A Window over the Sea.”

According to M. Rita Giancola, an organizer of the photo exhibition, they selected three photographers: Davide Caporaletti, Roberto Sardo, and Alessandro Eusebi, because all three of them, “have very different views and are very interesting.” For example, one of them uses very old methods of developing film. The exhibit is dedicated to Italian Maestro Luciano Pavarotti, she added.

On October 22, Tbilisi State University will host Professor Paola Gilardi, representing University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He will give a lecture on Italian language and its various dialects spoken in Switzerland.

On October 23, at the Cinema House at 6.30pm, Dr. Gilardi will give a public lecture about the sociolinguistic situation of the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. At 8pm, Esilio e passione. La saga dei Bruni (Exile and passion. The legend of the Brunis), a documentary about a Swiss family that emigrated to the Russian Tsarist Empire 200 years ago will be shown.

On October 24, at the Italian Cultural Centre, Ilia Chavchavadze State University’s Professor Glauco Maria Marfuri, will give a lecture: The Italians and The Sea, about the history of the Italians on the sea particularly referring to Italian ships and navigators, the sailors’ language and the languages of the sea.

On October 26, at 6pm, Shota Rustaveli State University of Theatre and Cinema will hold a conference on Italian masterpieces, narrating the changes and evaluations in Italian art from ancient to modern times.

On October 28, at 5.30pm, at Iv. Javakhishvili State University, Professor Franco Cardini, historian, writer and winner of several national and international prizes will close the VII Week of Italian Language and Culture in the World with a lecture: “Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and the Caucasus: Similarities and Differences.”

Comunita’ aborigena del Nord Queensland

Avendo letto di recente sui mezzi di informazione soprattutto italiani, articoli e approfondimenti sul tema degli Aborigeni in Australia, corre l’obbligo segnalare la preziosa attivita’ che lo stato italiano svolge a sostegno della Comunita’ aborigena del Nord Queensland, attraverso una azione coordinata di questo Consolato, della Direzione Didattica e dell’Ente Italian School Committee del Queensland che concentrata sull’educazione interculturale e la promozione della lingua italiana. Come Console per il Queensland e i Territori del Nord ho di recente visitato la scuola Kuranda District State School per potenziare l’impegno per l’insegnamento dell’italiano in essa e per valorizzare e comunicare la significativa esperienza di dialogo e incontro tra culture diverse, aborigena, australiana, italiana che descrivo in dettaglio.

La Kuranda District School e’ una scuola distrettuale del North Queensland e sorge in una zona rurale ai bordi della foresta pluviale. Nel 2007 e’ stata unificata con la locale scuola superiore, assumendo l’attuale status di scuola distrettuale con 220 studenti di cui 88 appartenenti alla comunita’ aborigena.

Ho avuto modo di incontrare gli esponenti della predetta Comunita’, che in quell’area vive integrata nel tessuto sociale. Il “capo spirituale”, Senior Willie, mi ha raccontato come la scelta di mandare i bambini a scuola costituisse un passo sofferto, visto che nella cultura aborigena, l’istruzione avviene per tradizione in modo diretto attraverso la partecipazione alla vita della comunita’. Gli adulti in sostanza sono anche educatori dei bambini di tutta la Comunita’.

Considero segno di grande rispetto e stima nei confronti dell’Italia e privilegio, avere avuto l’invito a fare una esperienza proprio nei luoghi che essi considerano sacri.

Ho avuto modo di constatare come i bambini aborigeni studino la nostra lingua con profitto e interesse, grazie alla capacita’ dell’insegnante di italiano, Abigal Noli e dell’insegnante di musica aborigeno che hanno saputo coinvolgerli in attivita’ comuni, quali calcio, il canto, i giochi.

Questi risultati sono frutto di un’attivita’ preparatoria svolta da questo Consolato e dall’Ente Italian School Commitee e all’impulso del preside italo-australiano Chris Capra. Grazie allo sforzo congiunto e’ stato inserito fra le discipline curricolari della scuola l’insegnamento della lingua italiana nelle classi 4,5,6 (equiparabili agli ultimi anni delle “nostre” elementari e alle scuole medie).

Fin dal 2005 la scuola aveva promosso una vasta consultazione della Comunita’ aborigena al fine di adeguare il curriculum scolastico ai bisogni educativi, di promuovere il coinvolgemento delle famiglie e la promozione della cultura aborigena, cercando quindi il coinvolgimento di quest’ultima nelle scelte decisionali.

Il risultato di questa fase preliminare e’ stata la sperimentazione del programma FAFT (Families As First Teachers), che ha permesso alla scuola di ottenere il Regional Showed Award per l’eccellenza nella scuola dell’infanzia.

Il programma valorizza i genitori come educatori e i membri della Comunita’ come figure importanti del processo di socializzazione e di educazione diretta. Le interrelazioni tra scuola e Comunita’ permettono di riconoscere e utilizzare gli stili di apprendimento parentali, di organizzare workshops a scuola e nelle comunita’ anche piu’ remote, con l’aiuto di un team di insegnanti e operatori sociali e sanitari.

Una serie di attivita’ come pittura digitale, costruzione di giocattoli e materiali educativi, fotografia, laboratori sulla trasmissione della cultura orale sono state sviluppate in un clima di insegnamento/apprendimento reciproci che ha avuto il merito di aumentare la fiducia, il rispetto e l’autostima dei protagonisti di questa importante esperienza autenticamente interculturale.

Piu’ di 100 membri della Comunita’ hanno frequentato in 5 differenti aree i workshops ispirati al “mutual learning” del programma FAFT . Dalla valutazione qualitativa e quantitativa dei dati raccolti e’ emerso un generale miglioramento dell’apprendimento, delle relazioni scuola – famiglia, della comunicazione intergenerazionale.

In definitiva sono stati osservati una riduzione del 74% di comportamenti negativi e l’aumento del 337% di comportamenti positivi tra gli studenti aborigeni. La frequenza scolastica della prescuola e del primo anno della scuola primaria e’ passata dal meno 50% prima della sperimentazione del programma FAFT a +85% dopo l’avvio del programma.
A titolo esmplificativo si riporta il commento di un membro della comunita’ Martha Brim, genitore aborigeno:

"Our communities like having the FAFT program as it shows families what they can do to help their kids before they start school. That will make it easier when they go to grade 1. We enjoy getting together and learning about the kinds of things our kids will do when they go to school. Some kids are frightened about school and FAFT helps them feel good about going. They get to know the teachers and so do we. We love this program so much."

On the occasion of the 7th edition of the ‘International Italian Language Week’, which this year is themed ‘Italians and the Sea’ the Italian Consulate in Brisbane collaborating with Queensland Government (Education Queensland), Co.As.It – Italian Language Centre, the Dante Alighieri Society Brisbane and the Italian School Committee, extends an invitation to participate in the events commencing on Monday the 22nd of October 2007.

The contents of the 7th edition is particularly close to the culture of Australia; the sea as a form and link to recreation, a source of sustainment, of enjoyment and scenic beauty.

Of equal importance is the role that the sea has had in every aspect of Italian culture: in its history, literature, economy, music, art and politics.

In particular for our Italian Immigrants who arrived in Australia via the sea, the voyage creating an unforgettable experience, often entrusted to the pages of a diary, or as the basis of stories and as such many publications: the sea, journeys of imagination, of leaving and returning, a place to encounter new worlds of possibility.

In the modern age, where distances are constantly shortened and an ever-growing number of Italian Tourists visit Australian shores to enjoy its natural beauty, it becomes urgent and important to communicate information about safety on the beach and in the ocean.

These are the suggestions inspiring the events of the upcoming Italian Language Week, created with participation of the scholastic institutions. The theme for the Italian Language Week has risen within the scholastic environment , proposed as a linguistic competition, chosen as a conduit of study and excursion. Therefore, we believe that via the scholastic, the opportunity exists to expand the participants and beneficiaries of the teachings of the Italian Language.

The excursion aboard ship titled, “Italians on High Seas?” offers reflection on new and innovative methods of teaching, stimulating and exploring new routes and new harbours

The Program

- Monday 22nd October 6pm at the offices of Co.As.It. Italian Language Centre, 42 Newbery Street Newmarket, Brisbane 4051, the conference entitled “Garibaldi: man of the sea” presented by Prof. Guerino Lorenzato. The conference joins the theme of Italian Language Week with the celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi and points to underline the important, profound rapport and significance by the ‘hero of two worlds’ developed with the sea, even sailing through Bass Strait in 1852, at the command of the clipper “Carmen”

- Friday 26th October 2007 at 2pm at All Hallows in Ann street, Brisbane the presentation of the winners of “Studitalia”, organised by Education Queensland and the Italian Consulate in Brisbane for Italian language students in year 12 of high school. The winners will spend a month in Italy as guests of Convitto Nazionale di Cividale del Friuli and experience full immersion in Italian schools in Italy, in contact with students and their families. All Hallows will showcase the participants of the competition “Garibaldi: Man of the Sea’s” and “My Grandparents Ocean Voyage’ organised by the Italian Language Centre in Brisbane and North Queensland schools involved in the teaching of Italian Language.

- Saturday 27 October 2007 at 10:30am at the Offices of Co.As.It. Italian Language Centre 42 Newbery Street Newmarket 4051 Brisbane, begins the conference themed “D’Annunzio and the Sea” hosted by prof. Guerino Lorenzato, which explores the role of the sea as a source of inspiration and as an object of love in the dannunziana style.

- Sunday 28 October 2007 at 10am, set sail on the Linguistic Cruise “Italians On the High Seas?”, an experience in immersion in linguistic, a full day dedicated to music, games and literature on the theme of the Sea. Organised by the ‘Dante Alighieri Society of Brisbane, Foster Street, Newmarket and reserved for Italian Language students. Organised to promote the study of the Italian language and the culture in an environment of active participation and motivation, joining pleasure and significant moments, different from the classic lessons. Within this workshop we will reflect upon the text of Alessandro Baricco, “Oceano Mare”.

- On the evening of Friday 2 November 2007 at 6.pm The Italian School Committee will host at the Civic Centre in Nambour (Sunshine Coast), Currie Street, Top Level il “Taste of Italy”, a representation of recitals, songs, dance and other artistic expressions. Created by primary and secondary schools on the theme of “Italians and the Sea”.

At the same location and presented by the Italian School Committee and with the collaboration of Surf Life Saving at 2pm will be inaugurated the exhibition of posters, created by students of Sunshine Coast schools, who will participate in the competition “Neptune”. The competition is orientated to create a Italian language poster on the concept of Safety at Sea and on the beach in Australia. The schools will be awarded during the presentation by the Consulate.

Welcome to the 8th edition of the Lavazza Italian Film Festival, Australia’s original Italian Film Festival. Each year we hand pick the very best contemporary Italian films from the Venice, Rome, Cannes and Berlin International Film Festivals and we are very excited about this year’s line-up.

Italy’s most respected and established directors are represented, including Ferzan Ozpetek, Francesca Comencini, veteran directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, and auteur Ermanno Olmi whose very last fiction film “One Hundred Nails” is not-to-be-missed.

The Opening Night selection, “Manual of Love 2,” is the highly anticipated sequel to “Manual of Love,” starring Monica Bellucci and Carlo Verdone and judging from your emails, tickets to the Opening Night Events will not last long!

Newcomers have not been overlooked with Roberto Dordit’s and Fausto Brizzi’s debut feature films included. Brizzi won the David di Donatello (Italian Academy) Award for Best New Director for his delightful 80s-themed “The Night Before Exams”.

IFF favourites Stefano Accorsi, Luigi Lo Cascio, Margherita Buy, Laura Morante, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Valeria Golino and Luca Zingaretti make appearances as well as rising star Riccardo Scamacio and Ambra Angiolini, Winner of the David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the stunning drama “Saturn in Opposition”.

I am as passionate about cinema as I am about my Italian heritage. It has been my dream to assemble these films each year into the only independent and truly national cultural film festival in this country giving Australian audiences in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart the opportunity to see my top pick of recent Italian films.
